While there are many features of the bathroom or kitchen faucet that need attention, the spout itself plays the largest role. Since it’s the majority of the faucet by size alone, it makes sense to base the purchase of a new fixture on its design. Many homeowners purchase what they think is the perfect faucet, only to find the spout bumps against a wall or is too high for a certain sink. Make sure to consider all of these faucet spout measurements first.
SPOUT REACH
The first feature of a faucet to consider is its reach. For a small bathroom sink or a single bowl kitchen sink, a 4 to 8-inch spout reach is likely enough. Look for the faucet to reach at least the middle of the bowl, and preferably the center over the drain opening for the least amount of splashing and the biggest work area for washing. For larger double and triple bowl kitchen sinks, the spout may need to reach 12 to 16 inches out instead of covering all of the sink space equally. Choosing a pull-down faucet can avoid the need for extra reach.
TOTAL HEIGHT
Height matters most for sinks that are installed under cabinets or other overhanging obstacles. If a tall faucet is installed, it may hit the obstacles or become damaged over time. At the very least, it’s hard to appreciate the appearance of a high-end faucet when it’s tucked under a cabinet. Measure the height of the space available and leave a few inches at least for headspace to protect the faucet. The distance between the faucet’s end and the sink also matters. Faucets that are too high increase the likelihood of splashing, while low faucets make it hard to fit dishes or hands under the flow.
DISTANCE FROM WALL
Finally, don’t forget to consider the amount of space between the faucet and the wall behind it. It’s fine to install the faucet nearly flush with it, but close placement may impede the reach of the faucet on either side. For the tightest fit in a small space, consider a wall-mounted faucet and a sink without a backsplash.
